Southwest Air’s Family Values Don’t Include Kiss
By Misery Xchord

Leisha Hailey discriminated against by Southwest Air DOOM! MagazineLeisha Hailey, actress and musician in electropop group Uh Huh Her, was traveling with her partner on a Southwest Airlines flight on September 26, 2011 when they were removed from the plane after a PDA. Leisha took to her Twitter to protest their treatment by the airline.

Southwest Airlines has requested details of the incident via Twitter, as they did in the recent incident where they threw Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong off one of their flights for refusing an order to stop and pull his pants up higher while trying to maneuver himself and his luggage to his seat while boarding, and he took to Twitter to comment (he was able to board the following flight without issue), but have not yet released a statement.

(UPDATE: See Southwest’s statement at end of this post)

Southwest Air seems to be becoming infamous for receiving Twitter callouts on discriminatory treatment of passengers since the Too Fat To Fly incident involving filmmaker Kevin Smith in February of 2010, where he raked airline personnel publicly for their humiliating treatment of himself and other passengers arbitrarily deemed too heavy for SW’s seats.

@ Maybe you guys should put up a big sign that lists what you don't tolerate before we spend our money on your horrible service
@ We didn't know intolerance and discrimination for slouchy pants, being overweight or being gay was part of your family values

So we've joined the ranks alongside @ and @ for being kicked off an @ flight, this time for being gay.

I have been discriminated against by @. Flt. attendant said that it was a "family" airline and kissing was not ok.

This is an outrage. I demand a public apology by @ and a refund. Hate is not a family value. I will never fly this airline.

We were escorted off the plane for getting upset about the issue. @ endorses homophobic employees. No one made her accountable.

Since when is showing affection towards someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers as "family".

I know plenty of wonderful same sex families I would like to introduce them to. Boycott @ if you are gay. They don't like us.

Did I mention to @ that I have a lot of their actions recorded on audio and video? RT #boycottSouthwest #discrimination

UPDATE:

Statement Regarding Southwest Airlines Customers Removed from Flight 2274
SEP 26 2011
Initial reports indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive. Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all Customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender. The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight. We regret any circumstance where a passenger does not have a positive experience on Southwest and we are ready to work directly with the passengers involved to offer our heartfelt apologies for falling short of their expectations.

@ I didn't realize a small peck on the lips is regarded as excessive and never once did your stewardess mention other passengers

I want to say that we will always stand up to discrimination of any kind. It should not be tolerated. This was so unfortunate! Nuff said

So, readers… what do you think of SWA’s “Statement”?

  • S.C.ALLY

We may not agree with South west Airlines policy actions and called then unfair and mean spirited; But they do not appear to be unlawful. We are lead to believe civil rights are licence to “Just be ourselves” as the impulse strikes us. the fact is that we live now in a world of commerce;commercial contract law.In this case, the purchase of the airline ticket was in fact acceptance of terms and agreement to them. The private corporation doing buisness as SouthWest airlines has the legal right to hold all obligated in contravt agreement to that contract.Ms.Hailey neglected to read the terms of the contract and the rules, codes, regulations that the airline reserved as its claim of right to inforce and hold the ticket holder in oblgation to that contract. If you are reading my comment , please do not confuse ths issue as being about gayrights. Instead, use it as starting point to learn that everything we sign our names to in this country or accept in a type of contract that binds in a way that we were not taught in school and ,by law does not need to be explicet to be legal.the law of the land is the U.S.code (tittles 1-50 ) and the UCC.
If you want to learn more about this : Google “with out prejudice” UCC 1-308 and learn that signing phrase above your signature will reserve your rights in court and have a legal leg to stand to fight your case.If you speak to Ms. Hailey ,tell her I said to grow up and learn the law and conduct herself with greater decorum in the future.

    • Southwest Airlines doesn’t have any policy outlining whether passengers may or may not kiss on board their airplanes. The flight attendant pulled “family values” out of thin air allegedly over a peck on the lips, without any passenger complaint or “excessive behavior” mentioned at the time and the strong implication of her personal homophobia involved.
